Officially established in 1883, the Rural Municipality of Odanah was named for a Cree Indian word which has has been variously translated as "meeting place", "resting place" or "gathering place", as a large Cree campground was found in the area. Symbolically the word Odanah is depicted by a drawing or picture of teepees.
The R.M. of Odanah is found in the southwestern region of the Province of Manitoba. It is situated between the City of Brandon and Riding Mountain National Park, to the south of the Town of Minnedosa. It is easily accessible by Provincial Highway #10 North and Yellowhead Highway #16 .
The municipality is ran by a council consisting of five members which are elected for a period of four years, the next election will take place in October, 2010.
The municipality which consists of 505 residents, is surrounded by a gently rolling landscape and is riddled with a multitude of wetlands which are home to some of the richest duck breeding grounds in the world. The economy is driven by agriculture and the Town of Minnedosa, the largest centre surrounding this farming community provides many of the essential services. The Rural Municipality of Odanah attracts many people who are wanting to live on beautifully landscaped acreage's, within close proximity of major centres while receiving low municipal taxes, no business taxes and can receive essentials such as water hook-up, cable, and the internet. This area also attracts many people interested in hunting, bird watching or waterfowl research.
